Safety stored by my mother in the mahogany chest within the house are clothing and stuffed animals from my childhood while in my bedroom there exists another brimming with art supplies. After selecting items from these two trunks, I studied and depicted four that represented my identity and passions when younger: the silk ribbon dress in the left corner from my dance debut (recital); the hanbok from my doljanchi, or first birthday celebration in Korea; my beloved stuffed animal that was gifted at this banquet; and the hot-glue gun purchased from a trip to a Michaels Craft and Art Store with my grandfather during my YouTube DIY phase. Even after seven years, I regularly use this hot-glue gun for my brother’s projects and my crafts. Through this still-life, I strive to convey the continuity of pieces from my childhood that blaze within me today. I am a dancing queen no matter how silly I appear, a Korean deeply proud of her heritage, a dog-lover, and a creative crafter.
Capturing the spirit and soul of my subject matter on canvas.
